‘The Strain’ season 4: Return date speculation and more for FX series

Tonight marks the end of the road for “The Strain” season 3, but if you’ve been checking out the news over the past couple of months, you will know already that it’s not the end of the road for the series as a whole.

Earlier this fall, FX confirmed that there would be a fourth season for the show, but also that this would be its last go-around on the network. While this is of course in many ways sad, we’re not going to be all too upset that the show managed to have this good of a run and stick around for a good bit longer than many other cable series are able to. One other way to look at this is by remembering that the show managed to get this renewal basically with just a fraction of the attention of many other shows that are out there, and by airing against what is a pretty hefty mountain of competition.

At the time of the renewal, executive producer Carlton Cuse said the following in a statement:

“It is a true joy to work at FX where creative intentions always comes first. Our original plan was for the series to last three years. Once we began telling that story it expanded to be more. After finishing the writing on season three, Guillermo, Chuck and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season. We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic season four. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”

Given that the late summer has worked well for the show before in terms of a premiere, we’re expecting the same sort of thing here. It gives them a chance to program at a time when, at least in the early going, there isn’t too much other competition out there.
