‘The Walking Dead’ season 7: Michael Cudlitz says cast, crew lied to preserve Negan secret

Michael Cudlitz -Through much of the summer with “The Walking Dead,” the general sentiment was that the cast and crew had yet to film the infamous death scene in which Negan was to take a life — or ultimately two lives. It was a way to keep suspicion under wraps for as long as humanly possible, and in some ways it was effectively.

However, it just so turns out that most of those reports and quotes you were getting over the course of the past couple of months were not entirely genuine. In speaking on that subject in a conference call with reporters (per Entertainment Weekly), Michael Cudlitz went through the full extent of what he and other cast members went through in order to preserve the big reveal that both he and Steven Yeun were done with the show:

“We filmed the scene about a year ago. It was literally the last episode of last year. We usually finish filming just before Thanksgiving and we had finished filming that one just before Thanksgiving. I had been sitting with it and Steven Yeun had been sitting with it — it’s been sitting with the rest of the cast for a year now. One of the good things was that we were able to spread a rumor that not even the cast knew what was going to happen and that they were going to find out when they came back and they filmed everybody’s death scene just in case. And they said they were re-doing contract negotiations for some of the cast — all that was a lie. But what it enabled us to do was not have to defend who was dead or hide who was dead for at least five months, which was great.”

Maybe there are some people out there who have a problem with people deliberately hiding the truth in such a way; personally, we don’t mind it given how many underhanded tricks many people use these days in order to spoil shows. Sometimes, don’t you have to fight fire with fire? We do think that there were some who suspected that Negan killed Abraham and Glenn, but for the most part this move was a complete surprise.
