HBO’s ‘Divorce’ episode 3 preview: Enter couples’ therapy
The second episode of “Divorce” on HBO was by our money significantly better than the first, but there is still one struggle in particular that the show may be running into: Trying to figure out precisely how in the world it is going to find a little bit of hope in the midst of so much misery. both Robert and Frances have redeeming qualities, but at present, both of them seem to be reverting back to a place where they each seem to feel that it is much easier for them to be miserable. That’s a pretty scary thing to think about.
Hopefully, a marriage counselor may be able to guide them on a much better path — at this point, we’re not sure that they have all that many other options. You’re going to see them go through some of this process on the upcoming Sunday fittingly titled “Counseling”; the synopsis for it is below:
“Robert (Thomas Haden Church) and Frances (Sarah Jessica Parker) attend couples therapy in an effort to see if their marriage is salvageable. Frances gets advice from Dallas (Talia Balsam), while Robert vents at work. At home, tensions mount as Frances and Robert try to maintain a facade of normalcy for the children. Frances arrives at an epiphany.”
The good news to date is that neither Frances or Robert has actually made the move to make the other party appear as the villain in front of the children, though that threat in particular has been made and as a result of that, we’re rather afraid that someone is going to actually go through with it in due time. If that happens, we can envision this situation rising to nuclear levels.
