‘Westworld’ season 1, episode 9 review: Bernard has questions, William shows his dark side

We only have two episodes of “Westworld” left and things are so crazy we have no idea how they are going to wrap all of this up. Luckily there is a season 2 of “Westworld” coming down the pipeline so if things are left hanging, we know answers are coming eventually. For right now we want to know what’s going to happen to Maeve now that she’s being pulled from the park for going rogue.

With Maeve out of the park, they are trying to figure out why she attacked Clementine, but the person that is looking into her behavior is Bernard. She tries to convince Bernard that she thought that Clementine was going to attack guests and she stepped in, this of course doesn’t work. When Bernard looks deeper, he discovers the changes that were made to her code and she knows that she’s caught. She tries to bond with him over them both being AI’s, but Bernard isn’t having it, so instead she controls him, telling him that he’s going to send her back to the park so she can finish what she planned to do there. Once Maeve is back at the park, she finds Hector and opens his eyes to what’s going on, so that he’s on board for helping her.

With Bernard being aware of what’s happening, he decides to have a talk with Ford after breaking into his office and learning that it may have been Arnold that built him – not Ford. Bernard asks for access to his history, and after a few threats, Ford concedes. When he goes into his memory he learns that he’s responsible for killing Elsie. He is also able to let go of his pain over losing Charlie, knowing that his son was never really his son and that it’s been holding him back all these years. While he was convinced that Arnold made him, it turns out that Ford was telling him the truth all along and that it wasn’t Arnold that created him, it was Ford. Not only that, but Bernard learns that he’s an AI replica of Arnold. When Ford realizes that Bernard will never be on his side again, he forces Bernard to kill himself.

Now that William and Dolores have been captured by Logan, he uses the opportunity to try and convince Logan that Dolores isn’t like the other AI’s and that he needs to use his contacts to get her out of the park. Logan reminds William that he’s marrying his sister, and after opening Dolores up in front of him and showing him that she’s a robot, Dolores grabs a gun and starts shooting people before running off. William convinces Logan that he knows he got caught up in the park so Logan unties him saying that he’s happy that they are going to be brothers. Unfortunately this happy reunion doesn’t last. When Logan wakes up the next morning, he finds the entire camp slaughtered by William, so he can go and find Dolores. A VERY dark moment for William and it makes us wonder if those conspiracy theories circling the internet about William and the man in black being the same person are really true.

Dolores finally finds her way to Arnold in “Westworld” and begs for his help, but he tells her that he can’t help her and forces her to remember why that is. She digs deep and remembers that he’s dead, she’s talking to a memory, and that she killed the real Arnold.

The part of this episode that really stuck with us was a conversation between the man in black and Charlotte when she revealed that he has a financial connection to Ford and helped to keep the park open many years back. She’s asked for his help to get Ford out, so clearly his influence is still strong… strong enough that he basically lives in the park now. Only one episode left! Episode grade: B
