Ratings: ‘Timeless’ ticks up; ‘Jane the Virgin’ starts okay; ‘Supergirl,’ ‘The Odd Couple’ fall

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times … Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration when looking at the primetime ratings for Monday night. There were some good things for the major networks to write home about, but there were also a few trouble spots that surfaced that in turn make us wonder precisely how secure all of these shows really are moving forward.

The good news – The latest episode of “Timeless” drew a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, a slight improvement over episode 2. Given our own personal belief that this is extremely fun, we’re willing to make a sweeping generalization and say that it gets a full season.

Also, kudos to “Jane the Virgin” for its first episode following “Supergirl”; while it did premiere slightly down with a 0.4 in the demo, it drew some of its best viewer numbers in some time with 1.2 million checking it out in the preliminaries. Whether or not this adjusts down is something we’ll have to wait and see.

Elsewhere over on Fox, both “Gotham” and “Lucifer” held fairly steady around a 1.1 rating. While that’s not a tremendous number, it looks good by comparison to some of the other shows airing on Fox these days.

The bad news – How rough was the start of “The Odd Couple” last night? It was surprisingly strong at the start of season 2, and that’s why CBS opted to give it a renewal and a premiere date this fall. With a 1.1 for its premiere Monday night, that’s starting to look a tad questionable.

Also, “Supergirl” dropped to a 0.9 rating for its second episode, continuing what has been a noticeable erosion for CW shows this year with all of them down across the board. This was the network’s #1 show last week. Will that last?
