‘Westworld’ season 1, episode 3 review: Teddy gets a backstory, William becomes a hero
On the last episode of “Westworld” we saw some of the AI’s gaining memories and retaining images of things that happened in this world. Not only that but we saw Maeve escape her surgery and wander through the corporate building seeing all that they do there and while she may not understand everything she is seeing, it’s something that could stick with her. Let’s see what’s in store for us tonight.
Dolores is starting to remember some of the things that were done to her by the man in black. For the first time Dolores is thinking that she wants to run away with Teddy and he says that they will do that someday… but she wants to leave now. Instead he convinces her that now is not the time and tries to teach her to protect herself against these men that try to hurt her, but she’s not able to go through with using the gun… that is until a man tries to assault her and her memories of the man in black come flooding back, then she shoots her first man.
Speaking of Teddy, he was never given a backstory, but tonight he got one. He’s been looking for a man named Wyatt, who was once Teddy’s Sergeant before he disappeared and came back a few weeks later as a completely different man – an evil man.
William is still exploring “Westworld” and trying to figure out exactly what he wants out of this experience. The deeper he digs, the more he realizes that what he wants is the feeling of being a hero and he gets the chance when he helps a damsel in distress. While Logan wants to stay at the brothel all day, William’s appetite for being a hero has been whet and he’s dragging Logan along on an adventure into the hills to find some of Westworld’s most wanted. Instead he finds Dolores running from bad men and collapsing in his arms.
Bernard is still trying to find out what’s going on with the AI’s and the “memories” that seem to be growing and what he notices is that an AI named Walter (that went crazy a few episodes ago) actually targeted other AI’s that he has beef with in past storylines he shouldn’t be remembering. Not only that but Walter was calling out for a man named “Arnold”. Ford reveals that Arnold used to be his partner, but that he was way too radical (and brilliant) with what he was trying to create as he wanted to give them memories and grow them into something more. It seems that what Arnold was trying to create has stuck as we have seen Dolores keeping some memories and Maeve is having memories of what she saw on the outside (like Teddy dead in a glass tank).
We love the relationship that is developing between Bernard and Dolores. She seems to be becoming a bit of a surrogate daughter to him (after losing his son he’s looking for something or someone to connect with). He knows that she’s changing, but is trying to hide it and is in many ways is encouraging it. Many shows try to pull viewers in with a romantic relationship, but this has become the most interesting relationship on the show for us. Episode grade: B+
