‘Girl Meets World’ season 3, episode 14 review: Riley tries to control the universe
If there was a song that perfectly suited Friday night’s “Girl Meets World” episode, it is the classic Rolling Stones hit “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Riley Matthews is still young, and she’s living in an era where it is so easy for people to have their dreams come true. There are a flurry of options and possibilities out there for her, and she has the luxury of being able to frequently take advantage of them. It’s a wonderful gift, but something that is not available for everyone out there.
It’s because of her good fortune that she is still learning that adversity exists, and sometimes, you can’t just conquer it by doing something different. “Girl Meets She Don’t Like Me” was a small-scale microcosm for that, as she learned throughout that being nice to someone doesn’t necessarily mean that they are going to be your friend. Maybe it creates hope for something down the road, but hope does not always equal reality.
There was of course the classic “Girl Meets World” moral in this episode, but we do also appreciate that there was a little bit of additional substance to go along with that in the form of school drama, some fun stuff with Riley and her friends, and one of the more out-there endings that the show has come up with. Over time we’ve felt like one of the show’s biggest struggles has been finding a way to adequately combine both comedy and drama, and this episode did do that.
Still, at the same time we feel like we’re waiting for “Girl Meets World” this season to make a bigger splash in the post-“Ski Lodge” era. Maybe that is something that will be coming in the weeks ahead. Grade: B.
