‘Pitch’ episode 2 preview: What’s next for Fox’s baseball drama?
Tonight, Fox aired the pilot of their baseball series “Pitch,” and one that found itself trending on social media before too long. We understand why, given that baseball is popular, the story is inspiring, and there was a twist ending that caught many off-guard. We’re not going to say it was a shocking as “This Is Us” earlier this week, though; this one had a little more of a “Mr. Robot” quality to it given that Ginny was spending time talking with her dead father. The only difference between this and the USA father is that she’s well aware of his status as deceased; think of him more as her Harry from “Dexter.”
The promo below gives you a small sense of what is coming up next, as Ginny does her best to try and assimilate with a team that is still trying to figure out what it means to have a female pitcher. The synopsis below offers up a little more information:
“Ginny attempts to fit in with the team, in spite of a sexist comment Al made about her years ago resurfacing. Meanwhile, Mike comes to terms with the mortality of his career and the end of his marriage, and Blip deals with fallout from Evelyn defending him to the media.”
We certainly think that the premise for this show is solid; the challenge here is going to come mostly in trying to figure out a way to sustain the pitch (get it?) for the show across a full season. There’s a reason that so many sports stories are told over the course of a few hours (a movie) rather than a full-fledged series. You have to continue to find new ways to produce drama.
