Emmys 2016: Tatiana Maslany, Rami Malek, John Oliver among winners (live updates)
Over the course of the night, we hope that this article is your go-to destination for all things Emmys! We’re going to be updating the article with not just the winners, but also analysis of all of them as the night goes on. Be sure to refresh the page for some more over time.
Supporting Actor in a Comedy – Louie Anderson, “Baskets.” This was fun, given that Anderson is one of those guys who has been in this business for so long with very little recognition to go for it. His speech, however, did make us feel like the Emmys should start to institute a scrolling bar of thank-you’s like the Oscars did earlier this year.
Writing in a Comedy Series – Alan Yang and Aziz Ansari, “Master of None.” It’s funny that after a presentation talking about the writers effectively being the little guys, the most famous nominee won! What canceled it out in a way was that Yang (hilariously) took up all of the time.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy – Kate McKinnon, “Saturday Night Live.” This was really heartfelt and sweet, and that was nice give how Kate often even does interviews in characters as someone else.
Directing in a Comedy Series – Jill Soloway, “Transparent.” This was a rather nice surprise for us, mostly because we assumed that the buzz for “Transparent” was starting to slow down a little bit.
Actress in a Comedy Series – Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep.” Sure, she almost always wins here, but hey — JLD does still give an incredible speech. This was was different though, as she spoke about her father’s recent death.
Actor in a Comedy Series – Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent.” Well, the funny thing about this win was that Jimmy Kimmel was right to hand him that trophy at the start of the show! Also, this was a pretty incredible speech.
Reality Competition Series – “The Voice.” We actually think that this is a flawed show (the Battle Rounds are terrible), but it’s 1) not “The Amazing Race” winning again and 2) it made a good chance for Mark Burnett to get his revenge on Jimmy for blaming him for Donald Trump being a Presidential candidate. (Burnett was an executive producer on “The Apprentice.”)
Writing, Limited Series / TV Movie – D.V. DeVincentis, “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.” Expect a lot of this over the course of tonight — there were even several people within this category!
Supporting Actress, Limited Series / TV Movie – Regina King, “American Crime.” Yes, the jokes about this sounding like “American Crime Story” begin now — but great show, and great performance.
Directing, Limited Series / TV Movie – Susanne Bier, “The Night Manager.” This was all the funnier thanks to Tom Hiddleston presenting the award to her.
Supporting Actor, Limited Series / TV Movie – Sterling K. Brown, “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.” This was an incredible performance, and ultimately, one of the most powerful speeches of the entire night.
Actress, Limited Series / TV Movie – Sarah Paulson, “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.” Brilliant performance, and while we don’t like predictability sometimes, we would’ve been angry if she lost here.
Actor, Limited Series / TV Movie – Courtney B. Vance, “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.” Tremendous credit to the TV Academy for giving the Emmys to the right people from this show, and not just the biggest stars.
TV Movie – “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.” We really enjoyed this, but we still have no idea what Steven Moffat was smoking when he came up with this idea.
Writing for Variety Special – Patton Oswalt. He’s immensely talented and deserves it for that, but there was a part of us just happy to see him get this win after losing his wife earlier this year.
Variety Talk Series – “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” We can’t wait for his lengthy segment breaking this down.
Variety Sketch Series – “Key & Peele.” Even if the guys are doing other things now, we’re certainly grateful that this existed in the first place.
Writing for Drama Series – David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, “Game of Thrones.” Get ready for this to be a trend tonight!
Supporting Actress, Drama – Maggie Smith, “Downton Abbey.” It’s ridiculous that she won, given that her storyline was the worst part of season. Also, did Jimmy read the spoilers for the Emmys before he made the monologue?
Directing for Drama Series – Miguel Sapochnik, “Game of Thrones.” By far, he directed the best episode of the entire season, and his visual talent is astounding. Truly worthy win.
Supporting Actor, Drama – Ben Mendelsohn, “Bloodline.” Well, this was a surprise — he wasn’t even there to accept it.
Actor, Drama – Rami Malek, “Mr. Robot.” Wonderful opening line that was also a reference to the show. Brilliant performance, and a really nice speech.
Actress, Drama – Tatiana Maslany, “Orphan Black.” This happened! It really, really happened! Everyone do that dance that we saw a couple of seasons back with all of the clones.
Comedy Series – “Veep.” After a great presentation from Larry David, he got a chance to give a trophy to one of his “Curb Your Enthusiasm” collaborators in David Mandel. Sure, this was another predictable win, but the show is hilarious.
Drama Series – “Game of Thrones.” To other series, hey, you’ve got a couple of years until the show goes off the air! It’s going to take a lot to topple this machine.
