‘Poldark’ season 2, episode 2 review: Did Ross receive a guilty verdict?
On Sunday night’s “Poldark,” there was a moment that we knew was likely coming, but also one that we very much rejoiced in: Ross Poldark being declared not guilty at his trial, one that ran the risk of destroying his entire life.
Of course, there were so many problems that went beyond just what we ended up seeing with Ross in this episode. Take, for example, us almost losing Francis Poldark in the episode as he locked himself away and attempted to rid himself of this world. That conversation between him and Elizabeth in the end was made even more painful as a result of that decision, especially since she knew ultimately so little about it.
From here, we do also have to look for a brief moment at everything that happened with George, a man who did everything that he could to ensure Ross’ guilty after he refuted offers of “friendship” (if you want to call it that).
There was a little bit of good news that did transpire over the course of the hour, and it came via Demelza: She is pregnant once more! While there are still issues in their relationship, whether it be with Ross’ rogue feelings or whatnot, this is a chance for them to move forward once more with a family following what transpired with Elizabeth. As she said near the end, “the future looks much kinder” than either of them expected.
It’s rare that we have a victory on “Poldark,” so we’ll take the end of the trial as that for now. We know that harder times are coming, but for now, at least we had a brief moment in here to smile — even if it did come after a series of dangerous events. Well done, Ross: You’ve got a little freedom. Episode Grade: A-.
