‘Ballers’ season 2: Dwayne Johnson reflects on Spencer’s key struggle
There’s a new episode of “Ballers” airing on HBO Sunday night, this seems like as good of an opportunity as any to reflect on what is at present the key issue for the series: Spencer Strasmore trying to figure out where his future lies now. Since the beginning of the series, he’s done his part to help athletes like Ricky Jerrett avoid some of the mistakes that he made, but what he kept secret were the sheer magnitude of these said mistakes. Now that some of the secrets are out there, he still has to deal with the emotional weight that comes with that.
Namely, we’re talking about him no longer losing his job.
Do we think that Spencer will figure out a way back in? Probably, mostly because at the end of the day, his heart is in the right place when it comes to trying to help these players. This is something that Dwayne Johnson talks about in a new video via HBO detailing where his character’s head has been at this season:
“With Spencer, he doesn’t have a financial background, he didn’t work on Wall Street, and he doesn’t come from that world. But, what he does have, better than anyone else, is an incredible amount of care for these players … He’s been down the road of poor decisions where [he’s lost a lot of money], and he doesn’t want these players to make the same mistake. He has the same DNA, but when you have nothing, and you go from nothing to a lot, and you’re very young and you have a lot of people pulling at you, it’s a difficult place to be in.”
