‘Rizzoli & Isles’ series finale review: Goodbye to Jane and Maura — for now
We knew going into the “Rizzoli & Isles” series finale that there would be emotions off the charts; if you were to equate them to a thermometer, they were so high that they may have broken it when Maura made her goodbye message to Jane. That repeated when Jane gave her own message later.
Most of the non-case tonight was all about preparing a farewell party to Angie Harmon’s character, complete with Angela’s ridiculous / accidental cake and all sorts of other theatrics that she didn’t want. She wanted to say goodbye on her terms. Apparently, dealing with Sock Jane is not a part of the equation. (For the record, that was the funniest part of the episode by far.)
We’ll be honest in that we did want there to be a case-of-the-week story in this episode, so it sounds hypocritical now to say that the final case is what we didn’t love about the finale. The reality is that we just it was something a little more impactful and high-stakes, since as it was, it was almost an afterthought that had us waiting for the sweet, emotional goodbyes to come back into the future.
In the end, we saw Jane preparing for her future tonight in wonderful / emotional fashion, while Maura then got ready to take off to France. Here’s the big surprise: Jane’s going with her! She made the decision rather than going to Quantico right away that she would start things off spending a month in France with her best friend. While the show is ending, at least it’s doing so in a happy way!
The reason we saw “for now” in the title is not because we know of any clearly-defined future for these characters beyond the show, but with the knowledge in mind that this is an era where you never know what can happen years from now. For now, we find ourselves satisfied … and wanting a TV movie someday of Jane and Maura’s adventures in France. This was emotional at times, but ultimately heartwarming at others. Farewell, Jane and Maura — hopefully we’ll see you again in due time. Finale Grade: A-.
