‘Code Black’ season 2 will not address character departures

Code Black -

When the second season of “Code Black” premieres on CBS, you are not going to see Raza Jaffrey and Bonnie Sommerville back as Neal and Christa. The reasoning for that is not a result of anything that the two of them did or did not do; instead, it seems more the result of a specific decision made for the sake of authenticity. With any real hospital, you’re not going to see every employee stick around forever. People take new jobs, they wrestle with new opportunities, and they get chances elsewhere to hone some of their skills. On this particular occasion, this could be what happened with these characters.

However, executive producer Michael Seitzman has made it clear that there are no super-specific plans at present to explain the absences, telling TVLine the following:

“We toyed with a lot of different versions of addressing it. But none of them seemed to have any real weight … [Every situation felt] generated in a writers’ room and not in the real world. “We pride ourselves on the show on being as authentic as possible… By not mentioning it at all, it felt like the least offensive way to deal with it.”

We know some fans will feel upset with this decision, but we do understand where Seitzman is coming from since it’s really hard to give doctors in a busy hospital time to reminisce, especially if the presumption is that they’ve been gone for a little while when season 2 returns. Even if someone they previously treated came in, they’re probably more concerned with current problems than who treated them previously.
