‘Doctor Who’ season 10: Series boss on Matt Lucas’ return
We first had a chance to meet Matt Lucas and his “Doctor Who” character of Nardole back during the 2015 Christmas Special entitled “The Husbands of River Song,” and clearly Steven Moffat liked what he saw enough to want to bring him back on a rather extended basis. While it’s not entirely clear how much of him we’ll see in season 10, all indications suggest that it will at least be more than just an episode or two.
As for how this return came together, that is also particularly interesting! Speaking per Doctor Who Magazine, executive producer Steven Moffat made it clear that a big part of the return ultimately just stems from a significant amount of interest on the part of Lucas in having it happen:
“I decided Nardole should return to Doctor Who when Matt Lucas got in touch saying, ‘I loved being in that show. Can I come back?’ And I sat there thinking, ‘Okay, so this guy who’s out in LA being offered every kind of pilot and every kind of career advancement has basically decided that instead of all that wealth and spectacular success, he’d rather go to Cardiff and make Doctor Who.’
“I thought, ‘He is of my kind. He belongs to our world.’ And so now that was an opportunity – given that it was in front of me and possible – I decided to import the best comic timing I’ve ever seen into Doctor Who on a regular basis.”
This really is a rather touching story in a way, given that so often we hear about people wanting to leave various TV shows in order to do movies, especially across the pond in Britain. Therefore, to get a reversal of that is rather nice, especially when you know that Whovians will likely embrace you all the more for it.
