A ‘Parenthood’ revival could actually happen — eventually
Later this year, Netflix will air its long-awaited revival of “Gilmore Girls,” and in turn give answers to the questions so many want … including those famous four words.
So what about another show starring Lauren Graham, given that we’re already on the subject? “Parenthood” spent the entirety of its run on NBC, and was a ratings underdog every year. Critics loved it, the viewers who watched did, and it brought a sense of genuine family drama you don’t often see elsewhere. You believed the characters, and more than that, you could envision them as individuals who actually exist within society.
Bringing back the series makes some logical sense, given you just move things forward a few years and then go from there. Do we think it necessarily needs a revival? Not particularly, given that this is not a situation of fans getting fleeced something. The series finale was excellent, and tied up most everything that needed to be. Still, creator Jason Katims is open to the idea, and told TVLine recently what would need to transpire in order for it to happen:
“It would start at the moment when I feel like I have a story to tell … But the whole thing about Parenthood is the kids get a little older and their lives change and then there’s more story to tell. I feel like that will happen at some point. And then it will be a question of, logistically, can we get the actors [back together] at the same time? And then we have to [find an outlet] that wants to [air] it.”
There shouldn’t be a problem with the latter so long as the price is right. There is a shot this could happen down the road in a similar capacity to “Gilmore Girls,” given that a series of 90-minute episodes suits this world rather nicely. Katims is right to balk at making them unless there is the proper story; otherwise, what’s the point of taking away from a great ending and ending on a worse note?
