Stephen Colbert treats ‘The Nightly Show’ host Larry Wilmore to booze — a LOT of booze

It’s true: The past seven days have been tricky for Larry Wilmore. Or bittersweet. Really, pick your attitude. He still can celebrate the fact that he actually hosted a show in late-night television, and brought a voice that is often still and silent to the spot. He did meaningful segments, and ones that alternated between that and blistering humor.

Now comes the bad part: His show’s sudden exit over its low ratings and small social-media footprint. After more than a year it meets a sudden end prior to the November election, the far more natural endpoint for an experience and an “Unblackening” so many months in the works in the Oval Office. How does one cope with such news? Well, booze is a good way to start.

Given that Wilmore and “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert have quite a history (they were both a part at various times of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and Larry eventually became Stephen’s replacement on Comedy Central), there was no better person to offer some consolation. Wilmore posted the photo on Twitter earlier today; the only thing that would’ve been better is if he were pouring all of these various drinks into the world’s largest cup.

We don’t think we speak for a minority of people when saying that we’d love to see Larry and Stephen teaming up on something in the future. His future still should be bright, given that he’s a prolific producer, a smart writer, and a daring talent in what can be at times a cowardly world.

Hopefully, Wilmore goes out with a bang on Thursday, and we will be here with further updates, insights, and (hopefully) laughs. Nobody wants to see him go away to the tune of the noise when someone loses on “The Price Is Right.”
