MTV’s ‘Scream’ season 2 finale: Does ‘who’s the killer?’ really even matter?

Scream -In just over 24 hours, the season 2 finale of “Scream” is going to be here on MTV. With that, there will be an opportunity for the series to answer a question that has been out there ever since the beginning: Who is really the person behind it all?

We feel for the writers entering this finale, mostly because there is one thing we’ve learned from watching so many other TV series equally themed around such a central mystery: It is almost impossible to make everyone out there happy. Inevitably, someone is going to be disappointed, and you just have to learn to not write for the sake of pleasing the largest audience. You have to come up with the ending that feels the most right for you and not worry too much about the response.

With that in mind, we’re not going to try to focus too much on whether or not Eli is behind all of this, or if it is a parent, some periphery character, or a main cast member who somehow has some long and complicated explanation as to how it happened. Really, this is not a show dependent on a killer reveal in order to be good or bad. That should have been determined by now. What the series has done a good job at entering the finale is continuing to raise interesting questions and possibilities, and then allowing viewers to draw their own conclusions based on them.

So our advice to you entering “When a Stranger Calls” is this: Don’t create any expectations. Just remember the journey that has gotten you to this point with the show, and don’t discard that if you don’t like the tail end of it. If you do just so happen to love whatever reveal the show gives you (even if they still keep something hidden), consider that to be the icing on the cake.
