‘The Amazing Race Canada 4’ episode 7 review: A sad exit in Kingston
Tuesday night’s episode of “The Amazing Race Canada” proved to be emotional, if a bit predictable in the end. After all, if you watched the past few episodes of the series, odds are you saw the elimination coming in time.
In the end, we’re still going to miss Julie & Lowell. They seem like good, happy people, and of course as someone with low vision we related to the guy (not so much when it comes to the insane athletic ability). It is fairly easy to chalk up their elimination to one thing above all else: Having some bad luck in the early going with the Chevrolet task (a.k.a. product-placement overload), and falling behind as a result. They’re not the sort of racers who can come back from a deficit due to their physical limitations. Lowell’s vision caused problems in the Detour, and then they also struggled when it comes to finding the clue in the Kingston prison.
The Race absolutely did the right thing in not changing the challenges to suit Lowell better, given that they have never done that for any other team. Yet, we do feel for them since they got such a bad draw on this leg.
On the flip side, Steph & Kristen are clearly establishing themselves as the frontrunners on this season with their third straight win. Even without U-Turning Jillian & Emmett, and with them not using the Express Pass as they could have, they still would have easily won this leg. They seem very good at handling adversity, and don’t have any discernible weaknesses to date (which is arguably much more important than having any one overarching strength). We would consider U-Turning a team that can just U-Turn another team a questionable move in some seasons, but with Jillian & Emmett it makes sense given that you might as well take a shot at them in case something goes awry. Plus, they understand that it’s a game and won’t take it as personally as some other people would. (Joel & Ashley were a little more upset.)
As for a few other odds and ends from tonight…
- Could Rita & Yvette be darkhorse contenders to win? They finished in their highest position to date this week in second, and seem to be getting better as time goes on.
- We’re worried, meanwhile, about Joel & Ashley, who seem to be very good when they’re firing on all cylinders but have made some small mistakes here and there that could add up.
- For some reason, we always love tasks that require teams to dress up as a historical figure only to then give a performance in front of other historical figures. Therefore, who doesn’t love a series of fake John A. MacDonalds? Episode Grade: A-.
