‘The Last Ship’ season 3, episode 8 review: The truth behind the cure
The third season of “The Last Ship” has been action-packed for sure, but there has been a particularly large degree of mystery around it when it comes to many things, including the true nature of what has been going on with Peng.
Through Wu Ming and some investigations, however, the Nathan James were finally able to decipher more information that they had started to pick up through Takehaya: Peng was planning to wipe out scores of people through a plan to falsely distribute the cure. Specific ships were marked, and there was an agent present aboard that effectively stops the effect of the cure. Nobody gets it, and therefore everyone eventually gets worse.
This is about as nefarious of a plan as you’re going to see, and we do like that at this point we are starting to be able to press on beyond the mystery aspect of this. Given that we’re nearing the home stretch of the season, now feels like the perfect time for a showdown.
Back in St. Louis, President Oliver is trying to establish trust and some sort of order in the government, which we imagine is going to be hard given the emotional beatdown that President Michener suffered before his suicide … or was it suicide at all? The episode certainly raised further questions, especially since it is clear that not everyone there is working on the same team. Sure, there are some classic political-thriller tropes here including the presence of possible moles, but we like having this present.
As a whole, this episode was precisely what “The Last Ship” needed in order to start to move forward into the endgame for the season. We know more of the players on the board, what they have, and what they want to do. Now, we just have to see what comes next. Episode Grade: B+.
