ABC looking at possible ‘Star Wars’ TV series
The idea of a “Star Wars” show is something that has been bandied about for pretty much forever, and as a result of that, it’s hard to even really discuss much of it. The last thing we want to do is get anyone’s hopes up that such a thing may be happening, since there have been so many rumors that have come and go. We do think it is a fun idea to consider, but the larger challenge here is a logistical one, figuring out if there is away in which the right story comes into place that makes it worthwhile.
While at the TCA Summer Press Tour earlier today (per Entertainment Weekly), ABC programming head Channing Dungey made it clear that there have at least been talks with Lucasfilm, but nothing altogether definitive:
“Oh, as a fan, I would absolutely love to say ‘Yes.’ The conversations with Lucas, we have had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming.”
She also made it clear that there is no official timeline; hopefully, we could hear something more next year, but it feels for now like “Rogue One” has to be considered the top priority. We certainly do think there is enough of a story to be told on a show, but viewer expectations would have to be appropriate. We’d personally enjoy more of a small-scale, character-driven political story inside a notable city, and not so much something that tries to match the excitement and action of the movies. “Agents of SHIELD” is the best analogy; the strongest episodes of the show are the ones where it takes advantage of its own medium rather than trying to be a big-budget Marvel movie.
