‘Star Trek: Discovery’: Could William Shatner appear in CBS All Access revival?
“Star Trek: Discovery” is going to be coming to CBS All Access at some point in the new year, and to date, almost everyone associated with the product has been keeping things under a heavy lock and key. There has been no word regarding just who is going to be appearing on the series just yet, but Captain Kirk himself in William Shatner has already been asked if he will be making some sort of return appearance.
His response? He’d be willing to, but it would need to be a role with some sort of substance. Speaking to TV Guide while promoting his new series “Better Late than Never” at the TCA Summer Press Tour, the series icon specifically referenced the recent “Star Trek” movie franchise’s usage of the late Leonard Nimoy as something he would not want to do for the new series:
“Leonard [Nimoy, who plays Spock in the franchise], my friend, did a cameo [in the new Star Trek movies] … I said to him, ‘You know you’re old when you go back in time and you’re still old.’ It was a cameo, and I thought, ‘That’s a waste of time. He’s so talented. Why didn’t they do something more with him?’ So that’s the way I feel about that.”
Specifically, Shatner added that he would appear if there is something offered where he could be “useful,” as opposed to a simple cameo.
It’s hard to say whether or not Shatner could appear in some capacity on this show, mostly because we still don’t know what this new series would be about. Do we think it would be a worthy move to bring him on board for some sort of arc? Absolutely. It could be an extended, passionate, and fascinating way to pass the torch. There’s a part of us who would want a representative from each iteration of the series on the new show, and that may come out of our love of nostalgia and the memories associated with past versions.
