CBS: No plans to swap Stephen Colbert, James Corden around

If you were concerned that “The Late Show” and “The Late Late Show” were about to be swapped around on CBS, don’t be. Based on what we’re hearing now, the network is currently content with the two being precisely where they are.

Speaking in a featured story with The Hollywood Reporter, CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller acknowledged that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” had been “uneven” to date commercially, but also does not envision giving the reigns of said show over to James Corden:

“We have no plans to flip the two shows. It’s really easy for people to pit the shows against each other. But they’re different kinds of shows, they’re different kinds of hosts. One was a known quantity to America, and the other was not. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the two and say, ‘Well, just because one show has this, why doesn’t the other?'”

As for Colbert, he does admit in the story that there is an emotional reaction that comes with these sort of rumors:

“The implication of that question is that the show isn’t good enough in its present position. So of course that makes you feel bad. But it doesn’t jibe with what I know about our show, so you recover.”

We do understand where the talk is coming from, beyond just an interview between Corden and Howard Stern that blew the topic out in the open. The late-night climate these days is one that often supports viral sketches like what Corden has with “Carpool Karaoke,” and Stephen’s real strength is in his interviews and his latent charm. Also, some of his best guests are ones who don’t necessarily make a huge splash online because they’re not typical celebrities.

So long as Colbert continues to have a place at the table, personally we’re going to be happy.
