‘MasterChef’ season 7, episode 7 review: Fry day or doomsday
Nobody wants to go home on “MasterChef” for cooking fried chicken. After all, that’s the sort of thing that almost every person out there cooks at some point during their lives, and in the right environment, everyone’s probably confident that they can do it justice.
Unfortunately, sometimes people just have nights. For Manny, tonight was his night. Burnt fried chicken is not someone particularly tasty to eat, and that mistake was enough to doom him in the Pressure Test. It was a rough night for the firefighter in general, given that earlier on in the episode, the Team Challenge for military veterans led to him being yelled at by Gordon Ramsay to get his head in the game.
While it seemed easy to think on paper that Manny would go home over this, the show did trick us with the edit. We strongly thought for the final minutes that it was going to be Diana, who has a couple of close calls under her belt. We don’t quite agree with her assessment that Manny already has “his dream” and she is therefore more deserving to stick around, but if she cooked slightly better food on the day, good for her.
Also, good for Katie for battling through tonight, and maybe also realizing that if she’s a personal trainer, she probably doesn’t want to come on TV and serve the most unhealthy fried chicken known to mankind.
This episode probably worked well for us because we’re such a chicken fanatic; the Team Challenge really wasn’t that dramatic, mostly because A) the Blue Team led by Alejandro won in a blowout and B) it was designed to be a little more emotional because of the audience in attendance. All in all, we’d say it was a solid episode, much like some of the friend chicken that escaped the bottom this week. We wouldn’t sing its praises too much, but we’d certainly be willing to have it again. Grade: B-.
