‘Uncle Buck’ canceled at ABC, season 2 hopes dim significantly

There’s some bad (and ultimately somewhat surprising) news coming right now about “Uncle Buck”: It doesn’t quite look as though it is sticking around past this summer on the air.

In a post on Twitter, James Lesure (who plays the character of Will) made it clear that ABC is not bringing the show back for another season, which certainly does disappoint us. We know that some will claim that this is not a surprise given that we’re talking about a show airing in the summer, and one that mostly did so just because it didn’t land on the 2015-16 schedule. Here’s why we are personally a little surprised over the news.

1. This is a show that didn’t actually draw terrible ratings over the course of its super-brief run. When you look at how many summer scripted shows are bombing, especially over on CBS, drawing over a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic does not look so terrible all of a sudden. It may be down versus comedies during the season, but there is a market for humor in the summer.

2. This is also a show that really didn’t have that much of a chance, and we don’t know how much of a risk it would’ve been to at least give it a small handful of episodes next year to see what would have transpired.

Ultimately, hopefully the cast is going to get some opportunities to do other things in the future; given where production is for many shows premiering in the fall / midseason, they may be able to snag some guest / recurring roles there before pilot season.
