‘The Musketeers’ season 3, episode 5 reaction: Grimaud and Feron’s latest plot
Sunday night’s new episode of “The Musketeers” proved itself to be entertaining, if a tad formulaic. After all, much of it followed a fairly basic blueprint: Someone creates plot, Musketeers learn about plot, and then Musketeers resolve plot.
Granted, there were some wrenches thrown in there throughout the hour that made things a little more complicated, whether it be a prison break, Feron murdering a financier to try to cover up for his past debts, or Borel thinking that he can trick the Queen just because he puts on a fancy outfit. The Musketeers did come out on top this week, but it always feels like a “I’ll get you my pretties, and your little dog too” situation by the end of the hour. After all, the real villains are still out there, and all these characters ultimately did was prolong things stay relatively constant. They will get worse, and judging from the preview for next week, it could be happening shortly.
To us the real highlight of this weekend’s episode came courtesy of D’Artagnan finding an escapee who happened to think thanks to PTSD that he was actually King Louis. This was more than just the case of a deluded prisoner, since it did turn out that this character was useful. More important to us was what he represented: An idea that mental illness was just as prominent as in any other time period during the era of this show, and there are a variety of different ways said characters can be treated.
When the dust settles, we’re not sure how much this episode will be remembered other than the one where the bad guys tried to steal some of the King’s gold by organizing a prison break. There was chaos and confusion, but not to the point where they were able to get what they wanted.
