‘Outcast’ episode 4 review: The sad story of Mildred and Anderson
We’ve had a few chances on “Outcast” to learn a thing or two about Kyle, so we want to start off our take on tonight’s very-strong episode with a few notes about Reverend Anderson: The guy’s a little creepy himself. We’re not sure what in the world he gets out of keeping around trophies-of-sorts for all the people that he helps, but he has some sort of perverse feeling of accomplishment that comes from it.
Then again, maybe we should say that we’re not completely surprised by this when we pause for a minute and remember that this is someone who got upset at the thought of Kyle being the big man on campus earlier this season. He’s someone who does enjoy helping people through whatever means possible, but he’s clearly also out for glory, even in subdued form, and we can’t forget that.
Tonight, what he learned is that one particular haunted memory of his may not be truly over in Mildred’s. What if she was not completely exorcised? He is starting to seriously question his abilities, and since he couldn’t see her in the present, he couldn’t do anything to wipe away his hurt feelings. As a matter of fact, it made him so worked-up that he started to doubt whether or not he had done the job with Allison.
Death to Donnie – There was a great turn in here from Scott Porter, who couldn’t have been playing some further from his “Hart of Dixie” character in Donnie. he was a cruel man out to destroy any semblance of peace Mark and Megan had, and specifically he had a dangerous past with the latter. Mark took action into his own hands after Kyle couldn’t get it done, but there’s not really a happy ending for Mark here thanks to the police, who of course show up at the most inopportune time.
We gotta admit that as a whole, we weren’t prepared to like this show as much as we do. The pacing was a little faster this week, but what we appreciate above all else is that we’re getting more of the human element to exorcism, a phrase that we never imagined saying before now. Episode Grade: B+.
