‘Doctor Who’ spin-off ‘Class’ will have gay main character

In the past, current “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat has spoken out about his desire to see an increased amount of diversity on his series, saying that especially in this world, they really have a golden opportunity to be as representative as possible.

While we cannot speak too much on the upcoming tenth season of the BBC series proper, we can tell you that the BBC Three series “Class” is going to introduce an openly gay main character, per writer Patrick Ness. Here is what we had to say on the subject in a new post on Twitter:

“Been asked if Class will have LGBT representation in it,” he wrote. “Will a lead character with a boyfriend who he kisses & sleeps with & loves do? “We were keeping that secret, but today that secret doesn’t seem very important. #lovewins.”

Ness is obviously referring to the unspeakable tragedy that took place recently in Orlando, where we ended up seeing fifty people lose their lives at the gay nightclub pulse due to an unspeakable attack.

Ultimately, we’re excited to see what this storyline looks like on “Class,” largely because we know with the “Doctor Who” universe it will be handled in a wonderful, remarkable, and at the same exact time sensitive way. They won’t exploit it, and make it feel completely normal in this world … precisely as it should be.
