‘Once Upon a Time’ season 6 debate: How much of Lana Parrilla’s Evil Queen should we see?

Regina -

We’re going to be waiting for the sixth season of “Once Upon a Time” to air on ABC until more than likely September or October, but we really are starting to get excited already about one particular story thread in the return of a villain we haven’t seen in the present in quite some time: The Evil Queen.

Is Regina technically still the Queen? Sure, at least in the sense that this evil side of her has always been a part of her consciousness. However, the show in the season 5 finale really tried to establish that it was something that could be removed from her, and in many ways, she managed to successfully do this! However, in the process the Queen was severed from her and basically out there now existing in her own way.

Should this side of Lana Parrilla’s character be the new Big Bad? We certainly hope so, since there is so much potential for this character to be the ruthless villain that the Dark Swan was not. As much as we like Emma, we’re not really sure that her “evil” actions in the first half of last season met the hype of her having this great potential for darkness within her. It felt almost like the show was afraid of really going there and having some of their young viewers see Emma in a terrible light. That shouldn’t be the case with Regina, given that they can always say that this isn’t Regina, and we’ve already seen the Evil Queen do terrible things as it is.

We would hope that we’d see the character cause carnage for at least the first half of the season, but to be honest, we’d be more than fine if she stuck around for the entire year. That means a lot of work for Parrilla, but we do think the show needs to shake up their half-season formula that has been there since season 3.
