‘MasterChef’ season 7, episode 3 preview: Wolfgang Puck appears!

Tonight, “MasterChef” debuted its second audition episode, and despite our pleas for some sort of wild-card round where eliminated home cooks would get a second kick at the can, the preview that aired following tonight’s new episode gave little to no indication of this coming.

Instead, we’re going to have our first guest judge, and it’s someone in Wolfgang Puck who almost any casual cooking fan has heard of. He’s a guy with a refined culinary palette, and a real knack for how to turn your food into your brand. In some ways, he’s a perfect guest judge for these contestants given that this show is about more than just food; if you want to have a career in food, you need to have a personality, and a name behind your brand. We don’t know if the show will give us any perspective on some of this, but we wish they would since the reality is that many good cooks don’t go anywhere because of that missing gear.

Also in this episode, the remaining contestants are going to be challenged by cooking some sort of iconic Gordon Ramsay dish, and at least one more home cook will be eliminated by the end of the episode. We really don’t know the contestants well enough to pinpoint who the eventual winner will be from this group, but we do like that there is another healthy mix of people from all over the country.
