‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13 spoilers: Ellen Pompeo teases Meredith, Riggs, and Maggie drama

The twelfth season of “Grey’s Anatomy” certainly went all-out in terms of cultivating some significant developments for its characters, and romantically, there was no bigger crossroads than the one Meredith Grey is in at present. She has gotten much closer to Dr. Nathan Riggs than she anticipated, and the issue now is that Maggie also has feelings for him and no real awareness about the history the two now share.

While love triangles have been around since the beginning of time, in this instance it seems to be a story Ellen Pompeo is excited to take on — provided it’s different than what she did so many years ago. Here’s what she had to say on the subject to Entertainment Weekly:

“I am excited to play it. He’s safe for Meredith because nobody likes him and she knew she couldn’t be in a relationship with him. That triangle will be fun. I just hope it’s written differently. I would assume that it’s going to be written differently. I just don’t want to play the same thing that I played in the last love triangle. 10 years have passed, so hopefully Meredith responds to this differently than she did 10 years ago.”

One thing that the series did rather brilliantly in introducing this character is circumventing about as many different expectations for him as possible. While many figured that Martin Henderson was going to be playing a love interest, at the same exact time we never thought he’d be a controversial figure, or someone Owen hated because of his history with his sister. He’s a very different person than we expected to meet.
