‘Rush Hour’ canceled at CBS; season 2 hopes bleak

Rush Hour -

*It appears that “Rush Hour” is coming to an end sooner rather than later.

While this cancellation was in particular somewhat easy to predict, it’s now official that CBS has ended the revival of the action comedy starring Jon Foo and Justin Hires. It’s a show that the network never showed a whole lot of faith in, given that they premiered in in the spring in a timeslot (Thursday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time) that typically fails to draw big ratings. The only reason the “Elementary,” which aired in this timeslot before it, has a renewal is because it’s already in syndication.

The other unfortunate thing here is that we don’t think the network did the show in favors by trying to remake the original movie more so than picking up afterwards, and pretending like this was more of the “further adventures of Lee and Carter.” It was better than most critics gave it credit for, though at the same time some of the jokes from the original product, which were still there to a certain extent on the show, have a harder time playing in 2016.

Is it possible in theory that someone else could pick the show up? We suppose so, but we have a hard time pinpointing a new home since the demo ratings were low and networks like TNT and USA, who were at one point into crime procedurals, have moved on more to other things. A&E took a chance in renewing “Unforgettable” after CBS dropped it, and this decision failing likely keeps them from being in contention.

This has been a bad week in general for executive producer Bill Lawrence — one of his other shows in “Undateable” was also recently canceled by NBC.
