‘NCIS’ season 13 finale: Michael Weatherly speaks further on saying goodbye

Tony -As just about everyone when it comes to “NCIS” these days, we’re getting rather close to the end of the season. With that, we’re also preparing to say goodbye to Michael Weatherly, whose character of Tony DiNozzo is going to be waving farewell on Tuesday. It’s been a great run that lasted for thirteen years, and there is really nothing else to do now beyond just watching this episode play out.

We’ve gotten a few different interviews now with Weatherly on the show, and this time around, we’re getting a sense even more as to why now was the right time to leave. Speaking to the New York Post in a new interview, the actor had the following to say:

“The hard part of it wasn’t playing the character for so long, because he was a very renewable resource for me, he was this bottomless well. What got difficult is it seemed like the character had to go. You can’t be in that No. 2 slot forever. That started to become a constraint to me and that ended up being some of the tension DiNozzo was having on the team. McGee (Sean Murray) was looking at him saying, ‘Can you get out of here? I want to be No. 2.'”

We think in some ways Weatherly’s being metaphorical here when it comes to McGee, but the reality is here the same: If he feels like it’s time to do something else, it is time. After all, we also feel like he’s going to get a more-than-worthy send-off on the show.
