‘Home Fires’ canceled; ITV drama not returning for season 3

Following the season 2 finale of “Home Fires” on ITV Sunday night, we felt excited and hopeful about the third season’s prospects. After all, the show ended with a plane crash, an attempt by Pat to escape from Bob, and a wedding that may not have stuck in the long-term.

Unfortunately, the network seems to have quietly canceled the show, opting to not give it a third season. In a statement per the Radio Times, a spokesperson for the show had the following to say:

“We are incredibly proud of what Home Fires has achieved, but the ITV commissioning team continues to refresh the channel’s drama portfolio, hence the decision not to commission a further new series.” 

Unfortunately, cancellations are the sort of thing that befalls many shows, and despite having a quaint charm and an excellent cast led by Samantha Bond, “Home Fires” was a show that did not receive a whole lot of attention in Great Britain while it aired. We feel like this season was hurt further by not having a huge it before it to support its audience, and it also is of a genre (period drama) that has potentially saturated the market.

Now, ITV has to continue its efforts to find a show that can capture lightning in a bottle in the same way that “Downton Abbey” did. That was their biggest drama series of its kind, and the BBC seems to be replacing it at least thematically this fall with the second season of “Poldark.”
