‘Madam Secretary’ season 2 finale reaction: is Elizabeth McCord still Secretary of State?
Tonight, the finale of “Madam Secretary” arrived with many questions, but one of the larger ones to us was fairly simple: Was Elizabeth McCord going to lose her job as Secretary of State?
Well, the irony here was primarily that it was not as bleak for our Secretary as we once thought; instead, Bess ended up getting an offer to become Vice President! This show is becoming “Veep” without the cursing! Admittedly, we’re a little torn about this development because to us part of the intrigue here is that we’ve never seen a show where the focus was specifically on the Secretary of State’s office, and we’ve had plenty about Presidential politics. We’d prefer it to keep its own identity.
Yet, we also root for whatever Tea Leoni’s character wants to do, and with an election coming up for President Dalton, this could be a theme for season 3.
Elsewhere, what about that Dmitri moment? Who saw that coming? This was a nice bit of closure for Henry, and for Stevie, she also made some movement in her own way courtesy of her engagement with Jareth. The home life for these characters is going to be busy moving into the new season, as well.
Ultimately, though, this was not really a finale out to deliver some sort of “Game of Thrones” style shocker, or to depress you in some way. Really, the only major cliffhanger here to us is if McCord will take a better job. Clearly, that’s different than what we end up seeing on the vast majority of shows out there.
