ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5, episode 20 review: Who is running for President?

We’ve been waiting to get to this moment on “Scandal” for quite a long time, but we’re pleased to be finally here. Thursday night’s new episode lifted the veil on the Presidential nominees, and while we weren’t too surprised with the results, it was still rather entertaining to see how it all unfolded.

For example, we’re not going to pretend that we’re shocked that Mellie is the Republican nominee. We’re not. Bellamy Young’s a regular on this show, and she’s had Olivia Pope’s help! If you had teamed these two up and there wasn’t a victory on the other side of it, that would have been disappointing for the majority of people out there. This was the proper way to do things, especially in seeing Olivia bring about the end of the Hollis Doyle campaign while we also saw Susan Ross eventually drop out in the wake of David Rosen’s actions in Florida.

What was most interesting in the midst of these excellent scenes was Abby deciding to not use Olivia’s abortion against her, a sign that these two former friends may be on the way to becoming just that once more after teaming up to stop Hollis.

Meanwhile, it looks as though Governor Vargas will be the nominee on the Democratic side, which is only surprising given that Rowan puppet Edison seems to be done for now. Yet, there is still an episode to go, and why knows what he has next? We’re just thrilled with the way the show presented and handled all of this drama in one episode; if only the real election moved anywhere close to as quickly. Grade: A-.
