‘Empire’ season 2, episode 16 review: Lucious’ mother still has that deadly edge…
Lucious Lyon may have been lying about what really happened to his mother Leah Walker on “Empire,” but we definitely got the sense of one thing above all else on Wednesday night’s new episode of the show: This is still a woman with a nasty edge, and a penchant for doing some horrible things.
What she did with Lucious tonight with the cakes has to be one of the nastier, crazier things that we’ve seen. Also, there’s an odd sort of power that she still has over this character. Credit does have to go to Terrence Howard for this performance, since the fear he had in his eyes was magnetic, and it of course makes you wonder precisely what is going to happen to him moving forward.
Romantically, things have been looking up between him and Cookie, almost as though his past transgressions have caused him to show gratitude. Yet, where’s the other shoe to drop here. Isn’t there something happening here that stretches beyond what we’re seeing on the show at present? Forgive us for being cynical, but at this point in the show’s run we’ve learned to question things like this.
Elsewhere in this episode, we also had a chance to see Rhonda finally start to suspect Anika was behind what happened to her in the midseason finale; yet, doesn’t this seem to obvious? Also, Jamal and D-Major slept together in a moment that may have been somewhat romantic, but also somewhat politically-motivated. At this given point in time, all options have to be considered. That may be a recurring theme, but that has what “Empire” has made us as of late. We question almost everything, but at least we’re entertained by most of it. Episode Grade: B.
