ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 5, episode 19 review: The Tarmac incident and the team-up

Thursday night’s new episode of “Scandal” was all sorts of crazy, mostly because we saw further reminders that in this show, nothing stays solid for long.

Take, for example, Mellie Grant and Susan Ross doing everything that they could in order to win the endorsement of the Florida Governor, only for their own arguments and plenty of complications regarding Mellie and Fitz at a tarmac to cause things to be turned around. Hollis Doyle ended up winning the votes of Florida, which in turn led both Olivia and Abby to realize something: They’ve been spending way too much time worrying about one another’s candidate.

The whole courtship of the Governor provided some entertainment, whether it be Mellie and Fitz actually working together (at least briefly) to Susan winning what turned out to be a pretty empty endorsement. Mellie learned that Olivia killed Andrew, but actually did not see altogether upset about it … or at least in comparison to what we had pictured in her mind going into this.

Now, let’s talk the end of Michael and Cyrus for now, as the former took their child and took off rather than continue to deal with some of the hysterics that continue to be present in this world. We get it, but can the writers devise something for Cyrus that is not him being in a perpetual state of misery? It does feel like we have seen enough of that to be okay for a lifetime.

Overall, we’d say that this was entertaining, but we do wonder just how much longer certain character stories (like Cyrus’) can last in their current form. Grade: B.
