Stephen Colbert, Jon Batiste tribute Prince on ‘The Late Show’ (video)
There have been a wide array of different tributes to Prince over the course of the past 24+ hours following his shocking death at the age of 57. Yet, there is something about the way Stephen Colbert and “The Late Show” crafted theirs that was subtle, and yet perfect.
In the video below, you can see Colbert start things off by talking briefly about his love for the “Purple Ring” singer from a pretty early age, and then he turns it over to his bandleader Jon Batiste, who told a remarkable story about how self-aware Prince was in any environment. He was able to pinpoint someone anywhere in a room, and have them show what he referred to as “courtesy.” Prince was a quiet guy, but it is clear in hearing so many reactions over the years that he managed to earn great respect and admiration from everyone he was around.
In honor of the singer, Colbert and the entire studio changed their entire lighting so that it would be purple, his signature color, for the remainder of the episode.
We’re sure that “The Tonight Show” would have also had a lovely tribute to Prince last night given Questlove’s personal love of the singer, and also his association with “Saturday Night Live,” a place Fallon is certainly familiar with. Unfortunately, the NBC late-night show is repeats this week, and we may have to wait to see what they choose to do.
Our hearts continue to go out to everyone who loved Prince, and we’ll have some more updates when it comes to TV stories tied to the singer as they come out. For those who missed it, an autopsy was conducted on Friday, and preliminary evidence does not suggest that suicide played a role in his passing. It could take weeks before final results come in.
