Is ‘Chicago PD’ season 3, episode 20 new tonight? Scoop on ‘Chicago Justice’ backdoor pilot

Chicago PD -Given that there was a new episode both for “Chicago Med” and “Chicago Fire” on NBC last night, it would be easy to assume that you’d also be getting something new regarding “Chicago PD” tonight … but that is unfortunately not the case. This show tends to sync its schedule more with Wednesday-night companion “Law & Order: SVU,” and there is no new episode for either airing until we get around to Wednesday, May 4 with “In a Duffel Bag.”

For the sake of the remainder of this article, we’re (spoiler alert) moving ahead to the events of the May 11 episode entitled “Justice,” which looks like it is going to be a very powerful case in particular for Burgess. This is the show moderating the climate that is out there towards police officers in real life, and this character may face some of the toughest times in her career after shooting someone who may have been unarmed. The synopsis below offers more:

“After a hooded man open fires on their patrol car, Roman (Brian Geraghty) is left wounded and Burgess (Marina Squerciati) takes off after the shooter, briefly losing sight of him, and shoots when she relocates him turning in her direction with a glimmer of silver in his hand. No gun has been found at the crime scene and the shooter is identified as a 17-year-old honor student who will likely never walk again due to his injuries. Protests begin as the public views the case as another incidence of a police officer shooting an unarmed African American teenager. Assistant State Attorney Peter Stone (guest star Philip Winchester), the same man who sent Voight (Jason Beghe) to prison, has been assigned to help defend Burgess and conduct his own investigation under the supervision of State Attorney Mark Jefferies (guest star Carl Weathers). Stone and his team need to collect enough evidence to indict the teen and clear Burgess, but must tread with caution on this high profile case as tensions run high.”

In case you could not tell, this episode is really the backdoor pilot for “Chicago Justice,” which is going to air potentially during the 2016-17 season. While nothing is for certain, we’re fairly confident that it will be picked up. NBC has a great reputation with Dick Wolf shows, and they’re also in need of a good legal drama at the moment. Audience reaction to this episode could play a role in the show’s future.
