‘Fear the Walking Dead’ season 2 premiere reaction: Show boss on pervading hopelessness
The second season of “Fear the Walking Dead” premiered on AMC on Sunday night, and it really did not take too long before everyone started to feel one thing more than anything else: “We’re screwed.” Even though they made it far away from the coast on the Abigail, the crew learned not too long after what sort of danger awaited them at sea. There were still walkers, there were potential human threats, and in going beyond that, there is also the extremely-mysterious Strand running the ship. Nobody knows what to make of this guy at the moment.
So where do we go from here? Showrunner, Dave Erickson, makes some of his current thoughts clear in a new postmortem interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“We’ve got to realize, if we learn nothing from episode 201, it’s that obviously, things are no safer on sea than they were on land. We’re going to be forced to return to land in episode 2, and we think, at first, that we might find some degree of sanctuary, but we realize that the apocalypse has spread, and it continues to spread and it’s the first time I think we realize that there is no safety anywhere.”
There is still something exciting that comes with this feeling of newness, and what is hopefully going to be a unique search of identity in this post-apocalyptic world. Something that may not have been pointed out much here is that for “The Walking Dead” proper, we woke up when Rick Grimes did, and many of the other characters had a chance to form their identity. Here, we’re still in the formative stages, meaning that there is time for some of these people to harden, and become more like the other people we’ve come to know and enjoy over time.
