‘Fear the Walking Dead’ season 2 spoilers: Is Strand really the villain?
Come Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time, AMC is going to launch the second season of “Fear the Walking Dead,” which is in turn one stuffed full of intrigue, zombies, character development, zombies, boat trips, and (you guessed it) more zombies. Even though we are heading to the high seas where you would think there would be a smaller walker population, this show may still find some rather-unique ways to surprise you. (Can zombies float? We have a bunch of silly zombie-related questions, but we feel like they’ve been asked already in every corner of the internet.)
One person in the cast of main characters who is constantly surprising us is Colman Domingo’s Strand, mostly because at the moment he’s almost like the zombie apocalypse version of Willy Wonka. He had some golden tickets that he could give to people to come and try to withstand the latest wave on his boat, and he’s chosen to go along for the ride the likes of Travis, Madison, Alicia, and many of the other main characters. Maybe he’s really a benevolent figure who wants to ensure that as many different lives are spared as possible … or he’s really secretly a power-hungry guy who wants to use these people for the sake of his own survival, only to dispose of them when he doesn’t need them anymore.
For the record (and just as a friendly reminder), you are meant to question these motives! This is something that Domingo touched on in an interview with TheWrap while promoting the upcoming stretch of episodes:
“Who am I? Am I Negan? I don’t know, am I? I wasn’t completely schooled on the original show, but these archetypes are so strong. I remember people questioning whether I was the Negan character, and I asked, well what is that? And I was told he’s good with words, he’s got a sense of humor, he’s dark but he’s vicious. And I thought, oh, that’s interesting, but I’m not sure. I think it’s just interesting to see the characters shift through the season.”
If he’s Negan, then you better hope that season 2 doesn’t end with him trying to drop an anchor on one of the main characters before we see a PoV shot of them dying. (What? Too soon?)
