Crime TV Heroes: Looking at ‘Scorpion’ season 2 and Walter O’Brien
Throughout much of our Crime TV Heroes series here at CarterMatt, one of our main priorities has been trying to uncover a little bit more about what makes each character we’ve spotlighted. For Walter O’Brien of “Scorpion” fame, it’s pretty darn easy to figure out. He’s a character like no other on TV! He saves lives, but at the same time he struggles to live his own. You want to see the most menial of tasks become easier for him, largely because it is in those he seems to struggle more than grand-scale operations.
Through this article, we want to get more into why Walter is the way that he is, and also some of the fascinating things that there are still to be explored.
Why he’s a hero – Because he’s resilient, he fights hard for the truth, and above all else, he’s someone who you really just want to root for. Walter’s not a perfect person, given that his lack of empathy and at times inability to process key information gets him into trouble. Yet, at the same exact time you want to root a little bit more for him because you know that he’s capable of so much amazing things; you’ve seen him use his genius and his power to great use.
What he can learn – For Walter, much of how he can still evolve over the course of the show’s run is still very much cut-and-dry compared to some other characters on the show. After all, he just needs to learn to express himself better, given that it would probably spare him of some of the under-the-radar heartbreak he occasionally has if he were to realize that there is not necessarily something great that comes with repression or struggling to get those words out. He has to be more lenient, more patient, and at times more understanding. It’s not always difficult, but these qualities will make him an even more capable frontman for Team Scorpion.
What we’d like to see him to next – Relationship-wise, the answer is clear: Get together with Paige. We’re not sure that this needs to be spelled out any more than we just did. We want to see him happy with someone in his personal life, and professionally, we’d like to see more of what happens when the Team is confronted with missions that require them to confront their worst fears, or take on more emotional challenges. We feel like we know who Walter is as a person at this point, but what would give him pause, and make him question everything about himself? We want to see that explored further.
