‘Galaxy Quest’ – Amazon revival put on hold after Alan Rickman’s death

AmazonIt wasn’t too long ago when the news first broke that Amazon was plotting out something involving the “Galaxy Quest” property, and there was some mass jubilation as a result of that. Sure, the movie may not have been the biggest box-office hit in the world at the time it was released, but it developed a cult following that made it the sort of movie that people wanted to check out time and time again. It was silly, funny, and tremendously creative.

Unfortunately, it looks as though the reboot / revival / whatever Amazon may have been planning is hung up, and it’s not entirely clear if it is going to happen at all. Speaking in a recent Nerdist Podcast interview with Chris Hardwick, Sam Rockwell (who played Guy Fleegman in the movie) made it clear that the recent passing of Alan Rickman certainly shook things up:

“They were going to do a sequel on Amazon … We were ready to sign up, and [then] Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn’t available … everybody’s schedule was all weird. It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That’s a hard void to fill.”

We were a little bit surprised to find out that the plan for this was to do something directly with the original cast to begin with, since we had always assumed that maybe they would do tiny cameos, but the new series would feature largely a new cast. Given the schedules of everyone involved in the first film, it’d be rough to get everyone back together again.

Who knows? Maybe something can still come together with this, but we’d say that if you don’t have a good idea, leave well enough alone. The original movie is so much fun, and it really doesn’t need to be tarnished.
