‘Criminal Minds’ season 11, episode 19 review: Paget Brewster returns, Shemar Moore is missed
After Savannah got shot last week on “Criminal Minds” and there was a possibility that she was going to lose the baby, it opened Derek Morgan’s eyes to the real dangers of his job. He decided to leave his job with the BAU to be with his wife and baby, and with that we lost actor Shemar Moore from the show. Tonight’s episode is the first without Moore and we are wondering how the team is going to feel without him since he is such a beautiful fit for the show.
The team is definitely missing Morgan, Spencer especially and seeing the empty seat in the plane gave us a punch right in the heart, just like seeing the opening credits with no Shemar Moore in it.
We did have the return of Emily tonight (played by Paget Brewster), who we haven’t seen in a while and it was nice to have a returning face right after losing Morgan. She has an unsub that she’s been chasing for a long time and he’s in New York copying murders done by the Son of Sam. She’s been having recurring nightmares about coming face to face with her unsub, unloading her gun on him and him laughing at her and leaving. She’s having tremendous guilt over the death of a coworker (and friend) by the hands of the unsub she’s chasing, feeling that she talked her into going undercover and it resulted in her death. The part Emily really doesn’t understand is why this unsub let her live when she had him in London?
Emily turns to Hotch and the team for help to finally get this guy now that he’s close by. When they are all reunited, Emily asks how the team is holding up after Morgan’s departure and they admit they are missing him quite a bit. Rossi asks her about her boyfriend Mark and she’s surprised that he knows, until she realizes that she told Garcia, which means everyone knows.
It was great to see Paget Brewster back on “Criminal Minds” – she has a really nice chemistry with the team and she brings a real strength with her that we love from the women on this team. Seeing Emily get her unsub tonight was great, but seeing Emily and Garcia reunited was the highlight for sure. Episode grade: B+
