‘The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story’ episode 5 video: Darden, Cochran face off

Crime Story -The OJ Simpson trial is really only beginning on “American Crime Story,” and the stakes are already through the roof. The promo below for Tuesday’s episode illuminates that in more ways than we can count.

Let’s start here with the battle between Christopher Darden and Johnnie Cochran, which could be one of the more headline-grabbing aspects of this entire trial. The show has not shied away from discussing the racial implications of having these two black attorneys face off, and whether or not this is meant to influence the jury one way or another. Darden approaches Cochran and asks that the two continue to “respect” one another; however, this is something that Johnnie is not particularly interested in doing. He wants to win, and will do so using whatever methods he possibly can.

From here, the prosecution will begin their mad scramble in an effort to get the upper hand on the defense. That includes looking back at some past allegations of domestic violence against Nicole Brown Simpson, and trying to create some sort of link between those and the murder. This is something that Cochran disputes. The challenge for the show moving forward is creating tension for a trial when you know how it is going to end; you better hope that they find a way to really play up the media hoopla and the sense of intrigue that came with this trial to make up for the predictable pace. They’ve been able to do that so far, but it’s a little easier when you are not spending so much time within the walls of a courtroom.
