‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 7 review: Barbara, Tom’s status; Patsy’s decision; Trixie’s struggle

Call -

We’ve been hoping to see an episode of “Call the Midwife” use the characters of Tom, Patsy, and Trixie as much as they deserve, since that has not been something that has really been a priority for the show for much of the past several weeks. Thankfully, we’re here to say that Sunday night’s new episode at least delivered in this regard.

So what happened? We begin our story here with Barbara, who definitely is admitting at least to herself that it is okay to have feelings for Tom. Who cares if it is a rather-unorthodox relationship? It’s clear that for the time being, the two are rather afraid that some others at Nonnatus would find out. How else can you explain there being so much controversy on the show revolving around something as simple as grease on the wall?

Meanwhile, we also have Patsy struggle more in her relationship with Delia, mostly because she is starting to become more and more clear as an idealist. She wants to understandably have her relationship in the public eye, but the reality is that it’s not that possible at the moment. Delia suggested heading to a place that was more accepting, but that doesn’t seem to really be a priority for her at the moment. Luckily, the two did get this opportunity by the end the hour.

Trixie’s storyline was a little more simple, and that was her admission of how difficult things are for her at the moment as a recovering alcoholic. All of these stories were woven into an episode that focused largely on contraceptions, and how some of the sisters were reacting to having the drug acceptable to people.

One final note about one of the other main characters: Who else feels for Sister Evangelina and her uncertain future.
