’24: Legacy’ spoilers: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ alum Jimmy Smits scores big role
Reasonably fresh still off of “Sons of Anarchy,” Jimmy Smits has definitely found himself a rather electric role on another high-profile series.
Sources confirm that Smits will be a regular in “24: Legacy,” the upcoming Fox reboot which is technically at the moment still a pilot. He will play the part of John Donovan, a powerful Senator who has his sights set on more. He also happens to be married to the former director of the CTU (“Homeland” alum Miranda Otto).
This role is the sort that is amazing not just for Smits, but for the show itself to get a major actor who will be familiar to a wide array of people out there. The challenge for “24: Legacy” is going to be figuring out smart, innovative ways to reach out beyond just the core audience for the series. Some of those people will probably watch, but at the same time you need to get people out there who bailed on the show years ago or maybe haven’t watched it at all. Otherwise, there may not have been much a reason to bring it back.
We do still feel extremely confident at the moment that Fox will want to order the series provided that the pilot is up to snuff, especially given the success of the recent “X-Files” reboot in attracting a lot of viewers. That showed precisely what the appetite for nostalgia is. Granted, Kiefer Sutherland is not said to be a major part of the series itself at this time, at least in terms of having an on-screen presence.
