TV Revivals: Is there a way to make a ‘Community’ season 7 (or a movie) happen?
It really hasn’t been too long since “Community” more or less had its almost-final nail in the coffin. Even now, we’re not entirely sure that the show is 100% completely dead; it just looks that way with Yahoo! Screen closing up shop and many of the original Greenville gang scattering to do other projects. Gillian Jacobs has “Love” on Netflix, Ken Jeong has “Dr. Ken,” Yvette Nicole Brown is on “The Odd Couple,” Donald Glover has “Atlanta” coming up, and Joel McHale recently signed on to a CBS comedy pilot. This is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how busy some of these people are.
To revive this show at this point, it’s going to be a challenge and could involve more than just schedules: You’ve also got to find a way to make it work financially since many of these people are capable of anchoring their own shows. Can someone pull that off? Let’s do our best to analyze.
How it ended – In what a rather lovely season 6 finale, we saw the likes of Annie, Britta, Abed, and others start to figure out what their lives could look like beyond Greendale. Jeff Winger started to realize that he was going to be the last original study group member there, and he was at peace with that. He started to find his place in the world, and didn’t have to be a super-snarky / overly harsh person all the time … but here and there is still nice.
How to bring it back – Six seasons and a movie! This feels pretty simple to us: Find a way to make either a feature film or a six-part series / season 7 (which you can still call a movie, if you wish) about a Greendale class reunion. Bring back as many of the original study group members as you can, plus fan favorites like Magnitude (pop, pop!), the Human Being, Starburns, and a few of the beloved instructors not named Chang. (Chang can show up in a different role.) Have some hijinks ensue where Jeff has to encourage everyone to fight to save Greendale one last time.
Could it happen? – In this case, we certainly think that it could, but it would take a lot of effort behind the scenes, some mastery when it comes to scheduling, and also someone willing to fund it. With Yahoo! Screen gone, who could that be? Can you get someone like Hulu on board, or do you go more for crowdfunding? We don’t doubt that there would be an interest among the cast in making this happen, but there needs to be a home. That’s what we are not sure of. (Also, we’d really love to get Donald Glover back for this somehow; otherwise, we’re not sure it’s the best tribute to the show’s run that it could possibly be.)
Do you think that “Community” should get at least one last hurrah?
