‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 6, episode 16 review: When is Melissa NOT a suspect?
There’s something very odd / funny / strange about the way in which “Pretty Little Liars” handles the Melissa Hastings character. Think about the amount of time that we have seen her in “loving sister” mode. Then, think about the amount of time that we’ve seen her in the form of a possible suspect of some sort of terrible murder.
Based on the end of the episode in which a certain part of Melissa’s luggage was missing, all of a sudden she is at the top of the suspect list for Charlotte’s death … though we doubt it. We’ve just been down this road before, and as a result of that know where we’re going: Nowhere. It’s pretty hard to envision any alternate sort of situation playing out here where she is actually the guilty party. The more interesting story to come out here is probably one that we’ll get in a week or two.
Some other suspects are starting to become a little more innocent. For example, Ezra was largely being shifty over not wanting to spill details on Aria’s parents getting back together, though he is also battling his own demons while trying to get the book together. Hopefully, he makes more progress soon, given that it seems like Aria is doing a pretty terrible job in the role of fill-in ghostwriter.
Also, what’s with the sudden history between Caleb and Mona? Our head’s still spinning over some of this. More than anything though, our brain is feeling a little frustrated still with this back half of the season and the whole notion of “change.” We were conditioned for the longest time to think that the second half of the season would feel different. The reality here, however, is that this all seems like more or less the same show. Grade: B-.
