‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 4 preview: Changes for Helen George, cast coming soon

Call -

Call the Midwife” has never been a show to accelerate great change; instead, it has made it more of a priority to focus on little alterations to the world of Poplar over the course of several weeks, months, and even years. Nothing happens overnight, but the medical community is constantly shifting.

So where are we going specifically next week? Following the case of an unmarried woman having a child with a married man (a specific moral quandary for the sisters of Nonnatus), these women will be challenged once again to adapt to the times, which are continuing to evolve:

“As the modern world begins to encroach on traditional Poplar life, everyone is starting to notice the changes. On secondment at a busy local hospital, Sister Julienne is impressed by the medical advances that are saving the lives of mothers and babies. But a traumatic birth raises moral questions for her which she struggles to answer.

“As the medical world is changing, so is society at large, with opportunities in education increasingly open to all. Despite his working class background, Ian is overjoyed to be accepted into university and embraces his chance to escape Poplar, much to the disappointment of his more traditional mother Sadie. But his plans appear to be in ruins when girlfriend Linda falls pregnant. Trixie and Tom help the family, which begins to break apart under the pressure of this unplanned pregnancy.”

One of the stories for Helen George’s character that will be rather interesting is seeing how she is able to tackle spending some more time with Tom once more; she did have a great friendly relationship with him, but how much of that (if at all) is going to change in the aftermath of everything that transpired between him and Barbara? That’s something we’re going to have to take a time-will-tell approach on … at least for that.
